Eens te meer werd de Bijeenkomst van de Religieuze Leiders van Europa met de Eerste Vicevoorzitter van de Europese Commissie, dhr. Frans Timmersmans, op dinsdag 29 november in het gebouw van de Europese Commissie met succes bekroond. Het onderwerp was migratie, integratie en Europese waarden. Het Oecumenisch Patriarchaat werd vertegenwoordigd door Zijne Eminentie Metropoliet Athenagoras van Belgi\u00eb, Exarch van Nederland en Luxemburg.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Tijdens de eerste sessie, voorgezeten door de heer Vicevoorzitter, hadden alle samengekomen religieuze leiders de mogelijkheid om hun inzichten te delen over problemen waarmee Europa in deze tijd worstelt. Populisme en onverdraagzaamheid kwamen ter sprake, twee van de plagen van Europa die alle godsdiensten lijken te misbruiken. De rol van het onderwijs kwam ook te berde als oplossing voor die fenomenen, net als de basis die dat lijkt te zijn voor sociale integratie en samenhang in Europa. Alle deelnemers verbonden zich er toe om met de Commissie samen te werken opdat de Europese waarden zouden aanvaard worden binnen het kader van migratie en sociale integratie.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Toen Zijne Eminentie Metropoliet Athenagoras het woord kreeg, analyseerde hij het probleem van de laatste jaren van de migranten in Griekenland, en verwees hij naar het bezoek van Z.A.H. Oecumenisch Patriarch Bartholomeos aan het eiland Lesbos, samen met zijne heiligheid Paus Franciscus en Zijne Zaligheid Aartsbisschop Hi\u00ebronymos van Athene, waar ze een boodschap gaven van vrede, eenheid, gastvrijheid en liefde.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Nadat elke godsdienst haar standpunten had uiteengezet, nam de heer Vicevoorzitter het woord, en zei onder andere: “De religieuze leiders spelen een belangrijke rol bij de bevordering van de integratie en participatie van alle leden van hun gemeenschappen in Europa, opdat die volwaardige Europese burgers zouden worden, los van hun herkomst en religieuze overtuiging. Door de dialoog die we ontwikkelen, bakenen we de gemeenschappelijke waarden af die ons verbinden, in plaats van de heilloze nadruk op de onderwerpen die ons scheiden”.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Na de Persconferentie, waar de deelnemers reageerden op uiteenlopende vragen van journalisten, werd de bijeenkomst voortgezet met een lunch die door dhr. Frans Timmermans aan de uitgenodigde religieuze leiders aangeboden werd, in aanwezigheid van dhr. Avram\u00f3poulos, Commissaris voor Migratie, Binnenlandse Zaken en Burgerschap. De heer Avram\u00f3poulos benadrukte in zijn toespraak dat “de oproep in alle gemeenschappen en hun aanpak, inclusief de religieuze gemeenschappen, noodzakelijk is voor het scheppen en onderhouden van een hechte samenleving, zonder eender wie uit te sluiten. Met de opgang van nationalisme, xenofobie en extremisme moeten we ervoor zorgen dat onze maatschappij een open, gastvrije maatschappij blijft – vooral voor wie aan oorlogen willen ontsnappen en nood hebben aan internationale bescherming – waarbij ze tegelijk haar basiswaarden en beginselen bewaart.”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Iets voor het einde van de bijeenkomst, deed Zijne Eminentie Metropoliet Athenagoras van Belgi\u00eb een voorstel voor een jaarlijkse bijeenkomst waaraan jonge vertegenwoordigers van elke religie zouden aan deelnemen, hetgeen door de Vicevoorzitter werd aanvaard.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Tot slot was iedereen vastberaden om vanuit zijn positie zijn best te doen voor een beter, verenigd Europa, dat de verscheidenheid zou eerbiedigen, \u00e9n het recht van elke burger om te geloven wat hij wil, zij het steeds met respect voor zijn medemens, zijn medeburger.
