“Ik geloof dat we nooit de hoop mogen opgeven, noch onze pogingen mogen staken voor de bevrijding van het bezette deel van Cyprus, wat ik zelf snel verhoop”, verklaarde Metropoliet Athenagoras van Belgi\u00eb (Oecumenisch Patriarchaat), die vandaag samen met Aartsbisschop Chrysostomos II van Cyprus en andere Aartsbisschopppen voorging in de Kerk van de Wijsheid Gods te Strovolos (Nicosia). Op de vraag van het Atheens-Macedonische persagentschap hoe hij de toekomst van de orthodoxie ziet na het Heilig en Groot Concilie van de Orthodoxe Kerk op Kreta, antwoordde Metropoliet Athenagoras dat “we enerzijds de krachtige boodschap hebben van eenheid van de Orthodoxe Kerk, en anderzijds uiteraard de moeilijkheid dat vier orthodoxe Kerken afwezig waren”.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Hij benadrukte dat de reden voor de afwezigheid van het Patriarchaat van Antiochi\u00eb gekend is. In een notendop zei hij: “persoonlijk geloof ik dat dit probleem eerst had moeten opgelost zijn vooraleer het Heilig Concilie samen te roepen”. Wat betreft de Patriarchaten van Moskou, Bulgarije en Georgi\u00eb stelde hij dat die zich niet hadden moeten onthouden, en vermeldde hij dat hij verschillende berichten had gehad die alle in dezelfde lijn lagen “dat ze de fout van hun afwezigheid bij dat Heilig Concilie begrepen hebben”. Metropoliet Athenagoras onderstreepte dat Aartsbisschop Chrysostomos aan het Oecumenisch Patriarchaat beloofd heeft dat het kantoor van de Kerk van Cyprus bij de Europese Unie zou ophouden te bestaan, indien het probleem Cyprus zou opgelost worden.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Brussel en de Europese instellingen hebben interesse in de stem van de Orthodoxie en houden rekening met haar standpunt, verklaarde de Metropoliet van Belgi\u00eb.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Hij merkte op dat het kantoor van het Oecumenisch Patriarchaat in Brussel in 1994 werd opgericht, op verzoek van Jacques Delors, toenmalig voorzitter van de Europese Commissie, “die de Oecumenische Patriarch in 1993 uitnodigde en verklaarde dat we nood hebben aan de Orthodoxie”.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Hij herinnerde eraan dat de Oecumenische Patriarch het woord nam in het Europees Parlement te Straatsburg, en er vervolgens in Brussel niet alleen talrijke ontmoetingen plaats hadden met de Patriarch, maar ook met andere Kerkhoofden.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Hij voegde er aan toe dat de Patriarchen van Alexandri\u00eb en van Jeruzalem, evenals de Aartsbisschop van Cyprus voor verschillende gezamenlijke ontmoetingen met verantwoordelijken met de Europese Unie naar Brussel waren gekomen. Wat het congres te Nicosia aangaat, waaraan hij deelnam, antwoordde de Metropoliet van Belgi\u00eb dat het Comit\u00e9 van de Vertegenwoordigers van de Orthodoxe Kerken bij de Europese Unie (CROCEU) was opgericht voor een co\u00f6rdinatie tussen de kantoren van de verschillende Orthodoxe Kerken bij de Europese Unie zoals die van Cyprus en Griekenland. Hij vertelde verder dat ze voor de derde keer samenkwamen: de eerste ontmoeting had plaats in Roemeni\u00eb, en de tweede vorig jaar in Athene.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In verband met de vrijheid van eredienst, die het onderwerp was van het congres in Nicosia, verklaarde Metropoliet Athenagoras dat dit “iets heel belangrijk is voor de wereld vandaag. Wij hebben grote noden. We hebben de jammerlijke gevallen van Syri\u00eb, Cyprus, Turkije, Servi\u00eb in Kosovo, en vele andere”.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
